Omiš
Omiš is a picturesque town with a true Mediterranean atmosphere situated at the mouth of Cetina River. It is located in the very heart of Dalmatia, between the two tourist centres, Split and Makarska. The river Cetina, with its magnificent canyon, which has cut its way to the sea into the impressive mountain massif at the beautiful, one kilometre long sandy beach make this part of the Adriatic coast unique and incomparable!
Populated as early as Roman times, Omiš was a fortified town in the Middle Ages. It had many rulers and masters in its past and there are many remains of the mediaeval fortifications, traces of different cultures in its architecture and art.
One of the Renaissance-style houses close to the parish church on the main square, houses the local museum collection (archaeological, cultural, historical and ethnographic exhibits from the region of Omiš and the nearby Poljica).
Take a walk through the old town centre and discover little alleys full of small restaurants, cafes, bistros, various shops and interesting and colourful market place, as well as many historical sites and locations, churches, historical fragments and artworks from local and Italian artists of the renaissance.
You could go rafting on Cetina River, one of the most popular activities in this area. Enjoy pleasant three-hour ride in the harmony of intact nature! The rapids of Cetina River are not difficult but it is still fun and exciting and the scenery is breath-taking: waterfalls and caves, deep canyons and jungle-like vegetation along the clear and green river.
If you are feeling more adventurous, try sliding down 8 steel lines above the canon! ZIP LINE over Cetina is one of the most exciting and wonderful experiences!
Enjoy the Big Beach, 1 km long sandy beach that the Cetina River has created on its way to the sea. We recommend you to gather a team and play some beach volleyball with your fellow passengers.
Walk to the medieval fortress “Mirabela” above the town to enjoy a fantastic view of the town and the surroundings (15.05.-15.09. open 9–22h). Another interesting site is the location of fortress Starigrad (Fortica) which is slightly more ruined. It can be reached from the south-eastern end of the town, just behind the harbour, via steeply ascending road, then a goat track, in about 90 minutes (elevation 311 m). 15.9–15.9. open 8-22 h; other months free of charge.
Try one of the various restaurants or pizzerias in the old city centre for domestic fresh food. We recommend Gusarska konoba (Pirate’s konoba) at hotel Plaža; restaurant/konoba Milo in town centre known for seafood dishes and meaty grills; Pod Odrnom is good shellfish and scampi restaurant; pizzeria Antula and fast food Brzogriz are popular for quick bites and budget meals.
Walk to “Duće” beach (30 minutes) in direction west or take a taxi to enjoy cocktails at one the lively beach bars.
